MEGAN ADAMS

INTERVIEW

Welcome to Baddass Kulture Magazine, so tell us a bit about yourself for those that doesn’t know you?

Hello, I’m Megan Adams, I’m 21 years young, I’m an automotive vehicle refinisher (car spray painter) and I’m also an exotic dancer at The Palace. I’ve been dancing in clubs for about a year and a half now, but it’s always been apart of my life, but my main passion is cars and I’m a complete rev head and take any possible chance I can get to be in or around cars.

When did you get your first tattoo, describe it and have you added anything to the tattoo?

My first tattoo was when I was 18 years old, ever since I was young, I knew I wanted to be covered so I had to start straight away. My first piece was by an extremely talented artist, she was a first-year apprentice, and she did my thigh piece.  This tattoo is a Native American themed piece and was just a random pick I had seen something similar to it when I was first looking into ideas for tattoos, and I knew this was what I wanted. There isn’t any significant meaning behind this one, but I knew I needed it on my body. This piece took two, seven-hour sessions as my artist was still learning and was quite a big piece for a person getting their first tattoo. As soon as it was completed that’s when I knew it was going to become an expensive hobby for me. Since then, I haven’t added to it but have been slowly coming up with ideas to finish off the sleeve.

Let us look at your tattoos in more detail starting with the eagle below your breasts. It’s a beautiful piece of art as it’s not just a photo of the bird. Please explain?

I’m very much into the dark looking more masculine tattoos and again this one was similar to a design I had seen online. It was of an Eagle, and it was an extremely dark and mysterious looking piece, this stood out to me straight away as it is very much how I am seen and how I see myself. I wanted it on my stomach as I knew it would flow with my figure nicely but was unsure if I was going to be able to sit through the work in such a difficult place. It was a hard piece to sit through due to being uncomfortable and painful I felt so bad for the studio I was at and the artist as I was screaming and cursing the whole studio down..

While we on discussing tattoos around that area, above your breasts is the skull complete with horns of a bull. Did you just like the design or were you a rodeo queen earlier in your life?

I’m very much still a rodeo queen and a buckle bunny, you can catch me at every rodeo being an absolute cowgirl. I not only love going to rodeos for the wild atmosphere but also to watch the talented people preform, I rode horses for a long time so can really appreciate the show that they provide, being there reminds me of the countryside I have, an absolutely miss. I’ve always been a bit of a country bumpkin and yes, I love, and I mean LOVE country music. Very rarely will you see me listening to anything else. You best believe I also dance to it at The Palace I even preformed a cowgirl themed shower show back in 2023 Miss Firm competition.

The word Loyalty is written above one horn with Royalty written on the other horn. This definitely seems to be something deep and personal?

These tattoos come as a trio, I have Respect down the side of my neck, then Loyalty and Royalty written on each collar bone, these were done early in my tattoo journey and do have meaning behind them. I was stuck in a bit of a shitty situation where these three things were never shown to me, I eventually realised my self worth and decided to get these three words tattooed on myself to remind myself never to let a person put me in that situation again.

The next design that sticks out is on your right arm seems to be Chicano style though that predominately is of beautiful girls whose faces are styled as skulls. These seems to have more meaning to them though, care to explain?

These are my Chicano themed tattoos, they represent the gangsta life and it’s always been a tattoo style that I’ve always loved and felt has represented my past. I have dedicated tattooing half my body with the Chicano style as it’s one of my favourite styles. I’ve also started it on the bottom of my leg. These ones don’t have to much significance when others see it, but to me it represents a bit of my past and the journey I’ve been on..

Moving to your lower stomach you have two separate scripts in different fonts. Care to elaborate what they say and their meaning plus the font used?

The very bottom one I’ve got reads Yeewhore, yes, I said it, whore, that one I’ve got as a matching tattoo with one of the beautiful dancers that I worked with from the Crazy Horse, I started my dancing career at the Crazy Horse and was there for a little over a year. Me and the other dancer both had country shower shows and both country loving gals. We kind of had a little inside joke where every time we did our country themed shows or danced to country music, we’d scream out Yeewhore and do a little boot scoot. So, on a drunken night this is where we decided to get matching tattoos above our vagina’s.

The other script reads, Y’allternative, again I had to continue on the country themed list of words. Y’allternative is similar to when you describe a person who is gothic/emo as alternative it is the aesthetic that is projected and for me it is very much country vibes so Y’allternative was best fit and also is a bit of a laugh..

From there we go to your left arm with a design that doesn’t have a meaning……or does it?

This is my mandala/ geometric tattoo, it will eventually become a full sleeve of this style once I find the time for another sitting. This was around the time I started my other arm and impulsively had the urge to get my other arm tattooed, one of my artists had posted about a cancellation so I spontaneously took the appointment and started this piece. It is very different to the other styles/themes of art on my body as I didn’t want to overload on just one style, I thought why not change things up a bit and add some spice..

Ok so let’s turn you over…sorry I had to say it and have a look at the wings on your back, is that something more personal to you?

Yes, this one is very important to me. This beautiful set of angel wings are there to represent my child I lost during pregnancy. They symbolise my Angel baby and were tattooed on my body in memory of heaven gaining back one of its beautiful angels..

Then moving to the back of your legs is a script on each leg spelt using very gothic lettering. Is there a meaning behind this?

So, these tattoos read Hell Bound. So far out of my tattoo journey I can say these by far were the most painful and uncomfortable tattoos I’ve sat through yet, I even tapped out before fully finishing them off! I didn’t think it was going to be painful so didn’t use any numbing cream or spray I eventually realised that was the worst decision of my life. As soon as the needle hit the back of my legs there was no stopping the leg/ ass spasms and twitches I eventually had to use numbing cream and the spray for the first time ever. I’m just extremely grateful that it was one of my close friends, Beth.tattoo, doing this piece for me as I know I was being a right old pain in the ass. It was worth every second of the pain as it is an amazing piece and couldn’t see myself without them.

As for the meaning behind the design and font used, I believe I give off very devilish energy, this being a person who can be very reckless, has a dashing spirit and can be quite mischievous. This pretty much sums up me and my personality, I have that so called Devilish Charm. I’m a very spiritual person but I do also believe in the devil, hence why I’ve got it tattooed on my legs, since these are all things that interest me, I needed to have these tattoos in a dark and bold font. I explained this all to my artist and she free handed the stencil on my legs and absolutely killed it.

Then going to the front left leg quadricep, you have a tiger and below it but still entwined is the face of a woman as if the tiger is more a mask. While the design is very creative is there a dark meaning behind it?

This piece was my first, it is black and grey with bits of colour added to make it pop, it doesn’t have much meaning behind it at all, it was just a design that at the time I felt was right for me and wanted to have it on my skin. Many of my tattoos don’t have much meaning behind them but were designs that stood out to me but I wouldn’t change any of them even if I could.

I have to ask is that peach next to your right bum your tramp stamp. If not, it just seems a weird place to put it unless you are flashing your arse at everyone?

This one has a little bit of a story to it. I was 19 I believe, and it was my first time ever going out to town drinking and clubbing with my friends. The alcohol was pouring and I being a very light weight drinker at the time come up with a “brilliant” well what I thought was brilliant idea and that was to go get matching tattoos with one of my friends. Both being very drunk we went to the closest tattoo shop which conveniently was only across the road and that’s where we decided on getting the peaches tattooed on our arses as we both have very peachy bums and were proud. But this is where my not so proud moment happened. The tattoo only took about five minutes and is just a small outline around the size of a 50c piece and cost me a whopping $200! at the time i thought it was the best thing I could have ever spent my money on, the next day it was questionable but still have no regrets about it..

The one design that hasn’t been mentioned is the one on your lower right leg with an interesting theme running through it. Would you please explain its concept and does the woman mean anything to you personally?

This one Is the Chicano style tattoo again, I have two pieces one on each side of my calf. On the outside part of my calf there is a woman wearing clown makeup and she is holding up an anonymous type of mask. This is called “Clown Chicano” these tattoos can represent emotions and revolves around the idea of hiding and not showing weakness. The clown can also be a symbol of playing games or even people potentially gambling with their life going with the attitude of smile now cry later.  My tattoo shows this well by having the Woman holding a mask that is visibly more happy and joyful compared to how she Is truly feeling in honour of that.

On the inside of my calf is a woman again with clown makeup going along with that same masking off the true emotions symbolism and adding the gambling with her life with her holding up a gun next to her face and bullets surrounding. This also represents empowerment and protection to potential dangers or can even relate back to a criminal past. This piece represents the life I have lived on the wrong path and how I have found the right one and conquered the dangers in my way..

You model on the side and I’m sure you have a Funny Story about one of your photo shoots?

When I did a photo shoot at the Adelaide Extreme Auto Expo, I had to strip down in a little swimsuit like leotard for a few of the shots in front of everyone and this was a family friendly event. Every mother, child, husband, girlfriend and partner were looking at me, that one was a bit awkward.  Don’t get me wrong I’m usually comfortable with this but when I was the only person that was in full hair and makeup and had to strip down and everyone’s eyes were on me absolutely mortified. Apart from it being a bit awkward I loved it, and the photos came out amazing and it was worth it..

What’s your greatest achievement and how has it shaped you?

I definitely think doing my apprenticeship has been a massive achievement. Getting out of my comfort zone and actually applying to be apart of an industry that is predominantly male was a big challenge for me. I was accepted and was seen as an equal to everyone was an even better feeling. Even becoming an exotic dancer was a massive accomplishment, when I was younger, I was a shy and timid person, I never had the confidence to stand up in front of people and be the main focus. Dancing changed this, it got me over my fears and shaped me into the person I am today, now I absolutely love being the centre of attention and will never miss an opportunity to have all eyes on me..
